XVIII National Youth Chess Championship-2009
 
Somak Palit wins at Calicut

The 18th edition of National youth chess championship for Mayor's cup concluded here in S.K.Pottekkat Cultural Centre, Puthiyara, Calicut. The event was organized by Chess Association: Kozhikkod under the auspices of Kerala Chess Association and on behalf of All India Chess Federation from Dec. 20 to 26,2009 . In all 60 players from all over India ,including 2 IMs., 2 FMs and a total of 44 FIDE rated players participated in this nine round Swiss Championship.


The Championship was inaugurated by the Mayor of Kozhikode Corporation, Shri M.Bhaskaran The meeting was presided over by Shri P.Abdul Rahiman, President, Chess Association-Kerala. Shri P.M.V.Panicker, President, Chess Association, Kozhikode delivered the welcome address.


Somak Palit of Railway's, the fifth seed rated 2385, played very well to clinch the title with clear 0.5 point margin. On his way to the title ,he won six games and drew three to score 7.5/9 and performed at 2506 on rating scale. In the penultimate round , he made a resounding win against I.M. P.Karthikeyan of Tamilnadu. Karthikeyan who had 6 point up to 7th round , could score only 0.5 point in last two rounds and finished third.He was runner-up of last year. I.M. R. Lalith babu, who lost his 6th round match against Karthikeyan did stage a come back scoring 2.5 in last 3 rounds and tried his best to win the last round game but ended in a king-pawn drawn ending. His effort earned him the runner- up trophy. The average rating of first 5 boards in the last round was 2346!!


The championship was organized successfully by Mr. M.Premachand and Devesh Kurup. Very good playing conditions, refreshments during the rounds, free hotel accommodation for every body mad ethe participants feel at home. On 25th December, a feast and music program was organized for all the participants officials and local guests. The Chief Arbiter and his team of arbiters helped conduct the event team in a smooth manner devoid of disputes.


In the prize distribution function , Mr. Pradeep Kumar, M.L.A. was the Chief guest and distributed the prizes tot the winners in presence of Mr.T.P.Dasan, President, Kerla Sports Council, Mr. P.Venugopal, Hon. Secretary, Chess Association-Kerala . Shri P.M.V.Panicker, President, Chess Association,Kozhikode presided over the function while Mr. Dharmendra Kumar, Chief Arbiter of the championship delivered the championship report.

May 06 2010 - Please be informed that the FIDE has announced that, here after all the rating tournaments should be registered 30 days in advance. We therefore request all the organizers / State chess associations to send their Bidform along with prescribed fee to organize any FIDE rating events, 45 days in advance to All India Chess Federation for onward submission to FIDE and enable us to allot the FIDE  / AICF event code for the event.   Download the Bidform
