National Junior girls champion Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa
played a positional game to defeat Kiran Mohanty of
Orissa and move over to the third position at the end of
the eighth round in the St Joseph's College of
Engineering National Premier Women Chess Championship in
Chennai on December 9.
Leader, S. Meenakshi won again and maintained her
slender half point lead with seven points from eight
games. Similarly, Dronavalli Harika also won and
maintained her second place on 6.5 points. Bhatki
wrested the third place from Kiran by defeating her.
Meenakshi played Ruy Lopez and used the opportunity when
Soumya Swaminathan weakened her own king
side.Meenakshi's queen and rook were set to do the
damage when Soumya resigned.
Harika beat Tania in a rook ending using an outside
passed pawn. Tania could have defended better and saved
a valuable half point. Nisha Mohota is on five
points after scoring her third straight win. She
sacrificed two pieces to net the queen of P. Priya
and checkmate her in 21 moves with the black pieces.
Three rounds remain to be played in this 25-player
eleven round Swiss.
