Two Players Share Lead
By Arvind Aaron

Top seed Dronavalli Harika of Andhra Pradesh and oldest Woman Grand Master in the fray, S. Meenakshi are leading the 36th St Joseph's National Women Premier Chess Championship in progress in Chennai on December 5.

Meenakshi used a pawn fork to win one of defending champion Kruttika Nadig's piece for a place in the lead on 3.5/4. Harika played more enterprisingly with a higher degree of risk to defeat National Junior girls champion Bhakti Kulkarni in this fourth round.

Harika and Meenakshi are leading with 3.5/4. Soumya Swaminathan (Mah), Kiran Mohanty (Ori), Tania Sachdev (Del) are in the third spot with three points each. Seven rounds remain to be played.

The winner from this contest will get Rs.75,000 out of the Rs.250,000 prize fund. Also a direct entry into the 2010 Chess Olympiad team to be held at Khanty-Mansiysk in Russia. The top six will get a chance to play in two overseas tournaments that will be decided by the All India Chess Federation.

Kiran Manisha Mohanty scored an important win over Aarthie Ramaswamy and is sure to be in the WGM norm race if not the title itself. International Arbiter K. Muralimohan, is the chief arbiter. Many norms are likely to happen here and out of form WGMs could be possible targets by younger players.
