Tania Defeats Kruttika

Tania Defeats Kruttika

By Arvind Aaron

As drawn games kept the leaders in their respectful slots, former champion Tania Sachdev of Delhi defeated national champion Kruttika Nadig of Pune in round seven of the 36th National Premier Women Chess Championship being sponsored and played at the St Joseph's College of Engineering in Chennai on December 8.

Round seven was slightly noisy as World Champion Viswanathan Anand visited the games and there was flash photography for a few minutes. Players were delighted to have a world champion come and watch their games. As all 12 games were in progress, only player who could get a picture with Anand was Pallabi Roy who had the fortune of getting a bye on this day.

Kruttika went for a pawn and strayed with her knight while Tania attacked the minor pieces repeatedly and won one of them to take her tally to 4.5 points, good for joint fourth place.

Leader, Meenakshi Subbaraman of Air India, Chennai played the Trompmowsky opening with the white pieces and Kiran Mohanty of Orissa was not surprised. She equalised easily. Meenakshi drew the rook ending in 46 moves without much difficulty.

Meenakshi leads with six points from seven rounds. Her rating performance is 2575 after this draw. It was close to 2700 after round six. Four rounds remain to be played in this 25-player eleven round Swiss. In the second place on 5.5 is top seed Dronavalli Harika of Guntur. Kiran Mohanty is in third place with five points. All three of them have not won this championship before.
