Five Players Share Lead

Top seed Dronavalli Harika of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh scored over Tamil Nadu's Pon N. Krithikha to be among the five leaders in the 36th National Women Premier Chess Championship sponsored and held at St Joseph's College of Engineering in Chennai on December 3.

Harika, 18, trapped the bishop of Krithika to win in 24 moves. She shares the lead with four others. Kruttika Nadig, Tania Sachdev, S. Meenakshi and Bhakti Kulkarni are all on full two points along with Harika after two
rounds. Nine rounds are left to be played in this contest which will conclude on December 12.

Among WGMs, Kruttika scored the best win over Mary Ann Gomes. Tania accounted for bottom seed Sithalatchumi.   Meenakshi benefited from a tactical blunder by Sai Meera. Bhakti played the Caro-Kann opening as black and  excelled in the middle and endgame against Savetha.

World Junior Girls champion Soumya Swaminathan has not managed to win any of her first two games since the title at Argentina. She tried hard but Eesha Karavade, also of Pune was too strong and they drew a level queen ending.


Aarthie rebounded with a win using the Dragon variation as black against Amruta Mokal.

Savetha (TN) 1 lost to Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) 2, Soumya Swaminathan (Mah) 1 drew with Eesha Karavade (Mah) 1, Nisha Mohota (PSPB) 1 drew with Swati Mohota (WB) 1, Kiran Mohanty (Ori) 1.5 bt Supriya Maji (WB) 0.5, Amruta  Mokal  (Mah) 0 lost to Aarthie Ramaswamy (AI) 1, Pallabi Roy (WB) 0.5 drew with P. Priya (TN) 0.5, A. Akshaya (TN) 1 bt  R. Bharathi (TN) 0, J. Saranya (TN) 0 lost to C. Sahajasri (AP) 1, Bindu Saritha (LIC) 1 - bye.
