Adhiban scores fifth straight win

Adhiban scores fifth straight win

By Vittal Madhav

As the fight for supremacy intensified, all but one game were decisive on the top ten boards in the ninth round of the 47th Premier National Chess Championship 09 sponsored and organized by Venus Chess Academy, hosted by Goregaon Sports Club and conducted by Bombay Chess Association. Overnight leader IM B Adhiban of PSPB posted a fluent win over his team mate and grandmaster Deepan Chakkaravarthy to maintain the lead with 7.5 points. Adhiban remains undefeated and his five consecutive wins is a very rare performance in the National Premier championship. IM Sriram Jha of Delhi is trailing Adhiban by half a point due to his win against Railways' grandmaster R.R. Laxman.

Adhiban opted for English opening, symmetrical variation against Deepan. On the 16th move, he got a slight advantage attacking with Queen against uncastled king. He temporarily sacrificed his bhishop for a pawn and got a strong attack on king, thus regaining his piece and 2 pawns. Deepan accepted his defeat after 39 moves.

The game between IM Sriram Jha and GM R R Laxman was the quickest of the tournament with a result in Sriram's favor. Sriram played the white side of the Bogo Indian defense. Laxman trying to put up a trap on 17th move fell a victim to the same, due to his miscalculations. Laxman resigned on the very next move.

In the Philidor’s defense game adopted by GM Neelotpal Das, the Tamil Nadu IM Sethuraman exchanged his rook for the knight and a pawn, but failed to hold on the initiative. With regular exchange of pieces, with rook vs knight endgame, Das won the game in 45 moves.

Experience prevailed over youth when GM GN Gopal of PSPB outwitted international master N. Srinath of Tamilnadu in the pure rook ending of a Sicilian Dragon variation game.

The game between GM S Kidambi (ELO 2516) and GM Arun Prasad (ELO 2570) petered out into a draw after 30 moves. Vidit Santosh Gujrathi of Maharashtra, a silver medalist in the world under 16 championship came back into reckoning by defeating his team mate Swapnil Dhopade. This is the first loss to Swapnil in nine games. Four more rounds remain to be played.
