Natonal Junior champion International Master Lalith Babu
of Andhra Pradesh scored his sixth victory to wrest sole
lead in the boys section while Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa
drew to maintain her one point lead in the girls section
of the Stree Seva Mandir Diamond Jubilee National Junior
Chess Championship on
September 25.
Lalith Babu started as the second seed and has won six
games and drawn two to lead the table with seven points
after eight rounds. Three rounds remain to be played.
Behind him on 6.5 points are S.P.Sethuraman, Arun
Karthik, N. Srinath, Shyam Sundar (all TN), Swapnil
Dhopade (Mah). In a main line of the king's Indian
defence, Lalith Babu lost the advantage of making the
first move at one stage. With a slight advantage behind
him, Ramnath's decision to offer a rook on move 26 did
not work as Lalith Babu had other aggressive designs.
Ramnath sacrificed his second rook too and this one was
accepted and the Andhra player won in 41 moves.
In the game between the other two overnight leaders,
International Master Shyam Sundar let his advantage of
white pieces pass by taking a 15-move draw against
fellow Chennai opponent and Grand Master norm holder
Arun Karthik. Former world under-12 champion N. Srinath
played a brilliant 23rd move to win a rook for knight
and defeat the top seed B. Adhiban. With back to back
defeats, Adhiban has damaged his prospects in this
event.
Bhakti Kulkarni and Bodda Pratyusha drew a fighting
knight ending after 82 moves. In the final position,
Bhakti had a king and lone knight against the lone king
of Pratyusha. The game was in balance all through
without any sacrifice of spirited action.
Pratyusha managed to end the winning spree of Bhakti by
taking away half point from her. Bhakti leads with
7.5/8. Padmini Rout who had a lucky win over Harini is
on 6.5 points and shares the second-third places with
Pratyusha.
