Bhakti Kulkarni Emerges Sole Leader

Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa emerged as the sole leader in
the Stree Seva Mandir National Junior Girls Chess
Championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sep 23.

Raghunandan V Gokhale of Mumbai was little lucky
to defeat R. Preethi of Madurai with the white pieces
from a Slav defense game.
Preethi was outplaying her Goanese opponent until move
40 when she blundered a central pawn. It mattered
in the end in a rook and minor piece ending.
Bhakti leads with 5/5 and is followed by top seed
Padmini Rout and Shalmali Gagare on 4.5 points.

In the boys group, no sole leader emerged as Ramnath
Bhuvanesh held top seed Baskaran Adhiban to a
fighting draw in the podium clash. Adhiban played the
Caro-Kann defence and faced the Panov- Botvinnik attack.
They reached a rook end minor piece ending after a
series of intricate captures.
This draw allowed three international masters, defending
champion M.R. Lalith Babu, P. Karthikeyan, Shyam
Sundar to join them at the top on 4.5 points. The high
seed to fall in round five was the 2008 Asian
Junior champion Ashwin Jayaram who lost to Shyam Sundar.
