Bhakti Kulkarni Emerges Sole Leader

Bhakti Kulkarni Emerges Sole Leader
By Arvind Aaron

Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa emerged as the sole leader in the Stree Seva  Mandir National Junior Girls Chess Championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sep 23.

Bhakti Kulkarni trained by Dronacharya Award winner Raghunandan V  Gokhale of Mumbai was little lucky to defeat R. Preethi of Madurai with the white pieces from a Slav defense game.

Preethi was outplaying her Goanese opponent until move 40 when  she blundered a central pawn. It mattered in the end in a rook and minor piece ending.

Bhakti leads with 5/5 and is followed by top seed Padmini Rout and  Shalmali Gagare on 4.5 points. Six rounds remain to be played. There is live coverage for this event on the leading boards and links are  provided on www.indianchessfed.org

In the boys group, no sole leader emerged as Ramnath Bhuvanesh  held top seed Baskaran Adhiban to a fighting draw in the podium clash. Adhiban played the Caro-Kann defence and faced the Panov- Botvinnik attack. They reached a rook end minor piece ending after a series of intricate captures.

This draw allowed three international masters, defending champion  M.R. Lalith Babu, P. Karthikeyan, Shyam Sundar to join them at the top on 4.5 points. The high seed to fall in round five was the 2008 Asian  Junior champion Ashwin Jayaram who lost to Shyam Sundar.
