Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa defeated Pon N. Krithikha of
Tamil Nadu in the ninth round to widen her lead in the
Stree Seva Mandir Diamond Jubilee National Junior Chess
Championship at the Nehru Stadium on September 26.
Bhakti, a winner of this event in Nagpur 2007 is on 8.5
points from nine rounds and is well set to regain her
title. Bhakti leads by a wide 1.5-point margin. In the
tied second-third places are Padmini Rout of Orissa and
C.H. Savetha of Tamil Nadu on seven points each.
Bhakti won a rook for knight following a mistake by Pon
N Krithikha on move 19. The rest was easy for the Goa
girl who stamped her authority as a leader to win in
style.
On board two, top seed Padmini Rout accepted the draw
offer from Shalmali Gagare in 32 moves after both sides
were unable to make a breakthrough. The fourth place is
shared by Shalmali Gagare, Bodda Pratyusha and Pv
Nandhidhaa with 6.5 points each.
International Master S.P. Sethuraman won against the
defending champion Lalith Babu of Andhra to open up the
National Junior. Fifth seed Sethuraman also wrested the
sole lead with 7.5 points from nine rounds with this
win.
The second place is shared by seven players on seven
points. It includes: Swapnil Dhopade (Mah),Lalith Babu
(AP), Anwesh Upadhyaya (Ori), Ramnath Bhuvanesh, Arun
Karthik, N. Srinath and Shyam Sundar (all TN).
Lalith Babu was holding on with the black pieces well
until move 33. His blunder came on move 34. In a series
of small combinations, Sethuraman won three pawns to win
the game and perch himself in the sole lead.
