Adhiban, Padmini Rout Lose In Round Seven

Round seven saw Baskaram Adhiban of Tamil Nadu and
Padmini Rout of Orissa suffer defeats in the Stree Seva
Mandir Diamond Jubilee National Junior Chess
Championship being played at the Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium in Chennai on September 24.
Lalith Babu of Andhra Pradesh who is defending his title
scored an important and methodical win over Adhiban with
the white pieces to reach six points. The new four
leaders are Lalith Babu (AP), Shyam Sundar, Arun
Karthik, Ramnath Bhuvanesh (all Chennai) on six points.
Arun Karthik scored a lucky win when Ashwin Jayaram
blundered a bishop in a winning position. Ramnath beat
Premnath after the latter missed a chance to draw in a
Sicilian Dragon. Shyam Sundar created weak spots
in the white camp to win a rook for bishop and win.
In the girls section, Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa did not
require any luck. She came upon an great idea of Padmini
Rout. Padmini was coasting towards a win. Bakthi fought
back and won to stretch her lead to a full point on 7/7.
Four rounds remain to be played.
In the second position on six points is Pratyusha of
Andhra. She accounted for higher rated Harini by playing
in machine fashion. She won pawns at various juncture
and finally the bishop to reach a won queen and knight
versus two rooks ending. Padmini Rout is in third
position on 5.5 points.
The chief arbiter is Debashis Barua of Kolkata. The top
three will represent India in the 2010 World Junior. The
top six will represent India in three overseas exposure
trips arranged by the AICF and paid by the Central
