Chanda Among Leaders In The Philippines

Seed No 16 Sandipan Chanda of ONGC, Chennai but living
in Kolkata scored a big win over top seed Krishnan
Sasikiran to share the lead with 5/6 in the Asian Chess
Championship in the Philippines on May 18. After
starting with three wins, Chanda has the momentum behind
him as he shares the lead with Vietnam's GM Le Quang
Liem on five points from six rounds. The third place is
shared by four players including Indian champion S.S.
Ganguly on 4.5 points. Other Indian placings at this
stage: 24 GM K. Sasikiran 3.5, 26 GM Abhijeet Gupta 3.5,
29 GM Parimarjan Negi 3.5, 30 GM Abhijit Kunte 3.5 40 IM

Chinese Trio On Top In Women
The Asian Individual Chess Championships for men and
women are taking place at Subic Bay Free Port in the
Philippines from May 13-23. After six rounds in the
Women's section, three Chinese players, WIM Zhang
Xiaowen, WFM Ding Yixin and untitled Ju Wenjun are are
leading with five points from six games. Zhang is yet to
meet any Indian so far, Ding has defeated Eesha Karavade,
Kruttika Nadig and Swati Ghate so far. Ju has drawn
Swati Ghate.
In the fourth place is WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram (Vie) on
4.5 points. Seven players share the fifth place on four
points and here you see the Indian names, WGM Swati
Ghate, WGM Nisha Mohota, IM Tania Sachdev. Other Indians
are further below in this 45-player 11 round contest. 15
