Three players, young Anish Giri, L’Ami Erwin and Vovk
Andrey are leading the table with full score from 3
rounds. In the joint second position is India’s IM
Adhiban along with 11 others on 2.5 points.
On the top board IM Lalith Babu, who recently won the
Leiden open, faced the Catalan opening from LÁmi and got
into a passive position very early in the game. He
misplayed a move in opening and soon lost a pawn in the
center. Lalith managed to create some confusion in the
game but L’Ami defended coolly to pocket the point.
Young Padmini Rout made a creditable draw again IM
Bitalzadeh from black side of Sicilian Najdorf opening
6.h3 system. This is the second time she is facing the
opening in the last few days, the early one being
against fellow Indian IM Adhiban at Leiden open were she
misplayed in the opening and lost. This time she was
well prepared and even managed to get some advantage in
the middlegame. Under mutual time scramble, Padmini
couldn’t find the right moves and settled for a
creditable draw.
WGM Soumya Swaminathan came very close to making a draw
with black pieces against the top seed GM Sipke Ernst.
In a completely equal position Soumya blundered by
allowing her opponent to sacrifice his Queen and get 3
pieces in return. After that it was downhill for Soumya
who lost the game soon.
