XIV International Open Chess tournament of Balaguer , Spain - Round - 9 Report

 GM Iturriaga Deuado of Venezuala takes the sole lead with 7.5 points at the end of the ninth round in the XIV International Open Chess Tournament at Balaguer, Spain.  WCM Shalmali Gagare (5) of Maharashtra won her game against the Republica of Dominica player Beltre Pedro in the English opening.


Sacrificing a pawn in the opening IM Fluvia Poyatos Joan (6) of Spain won a rook for a minor piece against Debashis Das (5) of Orissa and converted the advantage into a win in the endgame.  Udeshi Aditya (5.5) of Maharashtra drew his game against the Georgian FM Bregadze Levan (5.5) in the Queens Gambit Tarrasch defence.


FM Priyadharshan K (6) of Madurai won his game against Devangi Patankar (5) of Pune in the queen pawn opening.
Deepthamsh Reddy M (5.5) of Andhra Pradesh drew his game against the Women Internation Master Garcia Vicente Nieves (5) of Spain in the rook and pawn ending.


Bharathi R (4) of Tamil Nadu lost her game against the England Grandmaster Haslinger Stewart (5) in the Philidor defence. In the Kings Indian defence Girish A Koushik (4.5) and Saranya J (4.5) of India fought till the end and drew their game in the queen and pawn ending.


Employing the bind set up with the black pieces, Fenil Shah (5) of Gujarat won a fine game against the Spanish player Frances Cuscullola Oriol (4). GM G N Gopal (6) of Kerala drew his game against the Spanish IM Colovic Alexander (6) in the Ruy Lopez opening. Rakesh of Maharashtra (5) once again played the Monfa opening (1.d3 and 2.a3) against his team mate Pallabi Roy (4) of Maharasthra and won a fine attacking game. Mr Monfa of this place is giving a prize for the opening which starts with 1.d3 and 2.a3.


WFM Rucha Pujari (4.5)of Kholapur won her game against the Spanish player Parramon Guillaumet Jaine (3.5) in the French exchange variation. Shristi J Shetty (4) of Shimoga easily outplayed her opponent Navarro Navarro Crescensi (3) of Spain in the English opening
