International Youth Team Chess Tournament - Russia

International Youth Team Chess Tournament among Teams Representing Shanghai Cooperation Organization Countries was held at Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk Region, Russian Federation some 1700km south-east of Moscow from June 15th - June 24th. The tournament was carried out by Russian Ministry of Sports and was sponsored by Penetron (Designers of Hydro-electric facilities).   The Indian team comprising of CH.Savitha, M.G.Gagan,Viani D’Chuna and Jerome Jeorge Ebenezer with National Instructor Mr.K.Ganesan as coach participated in the championship

Eight countries took part in this unique competition which comprised of 4 different events namely:

1.       Classical

2.       Rapid

3.       Problem Solving

4.       Simultaneous against Russian Grandmasters

The countries were India, China, Russia -1 & Russia – 2, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Khazakstan, Tajikistan.

Each team comprised of 4 players playing Board 1, Board 2, Board 3 and Board 4 respectively.  Change of board order was not allowed.

Indian Team Board Order:

Board – 1: M.G.Gahan

Board – 2 : Viani D’Cunha

Board – 3 : Jerome George Ebenezer

Board – 4: C.H.Savetha

In Classical chess we stood 4th behind Kazakhstan, Russia-1 and Russia -2. C.H.Savetha tied for the first place on Board 4 but got only a silver medal based on tie-break.

The rapid event was also dominated by Uzbeks and Russians although Viani D’Cunha got an individual gold on Board-2 for India. Uzbekistan players won the team gold in this event.

Problem-Solving contest was a heartbreak for India though we won two individual gold on Board – 1 (M.G.Gahan) and Board – 2 (Viani D’Cunha). Our 3rd and 4th board players let us down which cost us the team gold.

Simultaneous against the grandmasters was a reasonably good show by Indians where we won a silver medal (Team). Here too M.G.Gahan and Viani D’Cunha held the grandmasters to get individual Silver medals. Uzbekistan also stood first in this event.

I was very impressed by the Uzbekistan 3-Board player named Nigmatov Ortik who is hardly ten. Indians should definitely watch out for this boy in the future. Uzbekistan won the team gold in all the four events!
