Indians again had a good day in the 4th round of the
Leiden International Open Chess tournament being held
here at Leiden,Holland.
3 Indians , IM’s Shyam Sundar,Adhiban and Lalith Babu
are among 8 players who are in joint lead with 3.5
points after 4 rounds. Three of the top 4 boards ended
in draws showing caution among the players.
HARINI on song!
Tamil Nadu’s Harini (1986) is playing well above her
expectations holding high rated fellow Indian IM
Karthikeyan(2478) to a creditable draw after being on
the defensive for most part of the game. In Ruy Lopez
Steinitz variation playing as white Harini got into spot
of trouble in the endgame which came about quite early
and was on the defensive. At one point of the game she
was in fact losing a piece for not much compensation but
Karthikeyan failed to notice the opportunity and let it
slip away. Thereafter Harini defended with her back to
the wall and made a creditable draw. She has already
beaten and drawn against 2 other higher rated players in
the previous rounds and is well on course for a norm.
Shyam Sundar surprised his GM opponent Andrey Vovk
(2506) on the 2nd board by playing d4 on the first move.
But soon after he mixed up the move orders and got into
a corner in the endgame against Vovk’s pair o bishops.
Shyam defended well in this part of the game and even
obtained a small advantage towards the end when he
accepted Vovk’s draw offer to remain in Joint lead with
3.5 points.
Lalith Babu after his first round draw with Harini has
scored 3 consecutive wins to come into joint lead.
Among the girls, Harini, Soumya Swaminathan and World
Sub Junior Champion Padmini Rout have 3 points each to
be in joint second position.
