Udeshi Aditya share the lead

by V.Hariharan

Udeshi Aditya (3) of Maharashtra shares the lead with three other players at the end of the third round in the XIV International Open Chess tournament at Balaguer, Spain. Playing against the Philidor defence of the English GM Haslinger Stewart , Aditya sacrificed his centre pawn for piling up his pieces on the kingside. To defend against the kingside pressure, black was forced to weaken his Kingside . When both were in time pressure, the grandmaster who was defending made an error in his assessment by taking into account an illegal move in his calculation. At the end of the combination Black moved the pinned knight to give check but it was an illegal move and Aditya claimed the illegal move to the arbiter who as per rule added two minutes to his clock. Because of this wrong calculation black lost the exchange and the game.

Deepthamsh Reddy held the winner of the Sort International tournament GM Pogorelov Ruslan to a creditable draw in 30 moves.

Saranya J of Tamil Nadu defeated the Latvian International Master Starostits Ilmars in a fine attacking game. Black employing the Alekhine defence underestimated the opponent, made a wrong pawn move followed by a knight sacrifice to open up the white’s kingside. But Saranya coolly accepted the knight offer and made use of the opened file to her advantage. By giving back the knight she rib opened the opponent’s king side and won the game.

Shalmali Gagare of Maharashtra playing black won an exchange against the Bulgarian IM Ivanov Jordan in the slav opening. But because of some complications created by the IM she could not convert the advantage but was forced to go for the opposite coloured bishop ending and finally drew the game.

WFM Rucha Pujari of Maharashtra held the veteran GM Westerinen Heikki of Finland to a comfortable draw in the centre counter opening.Girish A Koushik fought a marathon battle against the second seed GM Burmakin Vladimir of Russia in the dutch stonewall defence but lost the game in the rook and pawn ending.

Debashis Das lost to GM Mateo Raman of Republic of Dominic in the Sicilian defence. Rakesh Kulkarni again employed the 1.d3 and 2.a3 opening and lost to the Beltre Pedro of Republic of Dominica.
