Pune girl Soumya Swaminathan had a dream start to the
Dieren open with a comprehensive win over IM Karthikeyan
in the 2nd round of the Dieren open being held here.
She is now in joint lead along with IM’s Adhiban, Shyam
Sundar and Lalith Babu and 9 others with 2 points. In a
game from white side of Archangel variation, Soumya
chose a harmless continuation with d3 structure.
Karthikeyan played a reckless early d5 pawn break before
developing his pieces and was duly punished by being
made to lose a pawn for little compensation. Karthikeyan
then went on a Kingside attack only to be beautifully
refuted by a brilliant Queen sacrifice by Soumya which
threatened mate or the loss of an exchange.
Highly rated GM’s Ikonnikov and Yuri Vovk were held to
draws by their less rated rivals.
IM Shyam Sundar played the longest game of his career so
far in beating lesser rated Van Blokland of Netherlands,
with the game stretching beyond 100 moves. Finally
Shyams opponent lost on time with Shyam having a Queen
and Knight against opponents Queen. The game lasts 6
hours of play.
