GM Tornike Sanikidze (2559) from Georgia went into the
sole lead with 4.5 points after winning his game against
India’s IM Shyam Sundar in the 5th round of the Leiden
open at The Netherlands.
Indians had a mixed day with the girls having the bad
side of it.
In the 2nd board , Sanikidze played 1.e4 and surprised
Shyam Sundar right in the first move. The game went into
Worrell attack of Ruy Lopez variation where Shyam
misplayed on the Queenside leaving his Kingside without
adequate piece support. Sanikidze opened the position
with f4 and got a dangerous initiative against Shyams
King. Shyam defended well under time trouble but
couldn’t stop Sanikidze from delivering the decisive
blow on the Kingside and soon resigned.
Tamil Nadus Harini who was having a dream run in the
tournament till now suffered her first defeat in the
hands of IM Slingerland from Netherlands. Playing the
black pieces she got into a spot of bother but managed
to wriggle out into drawn Rook and pawn ending with a
pawn down. She got the chance to go into a Rook and
Bishop pawn versus Rook Ending but chose not to and
blundered to let the opponent promote his c pawn. She
still has good chances of making a norm considering her
high opponent average rating.
IM Adhiban held higher rated GM Savchenko(2526) to a
creditable draw from the white side of Sicilian Najdorf.
Savchenko played a new idea of Ivanchuk from a recent
game and obtained comfortable play right from the
opening. After 14 moves he offered a draw in an equal
position which Adhiban had no hesitation in accepting.
