IM Lalith Babu continued his fine run by holding top
seed GM Van den Doel of Netherlands from black pieces to
remain in 2nd position in the Leiden open 2009.
IM’s Karthikeya,Adhiban and Shreyansh Daklia are closely
following Lalith with 5 points. Harini is well on course
to making a norm in this tournament with 2 rounds to go.
Lalith played CaroKann as black and got into a passive
position from the opening against Van den Doel’s Panov-
Botwinnik attack. Van den Doel missed many promising
continuations at various stages of the game and Lalith
could slowly wriggle out of trouble by exchanging pieces
at regular interval. A win in the next round could take
Lalith close to making a GM norm.
Karthikeyan played a long and difficult game against GM
Savchenko from white side of Slav defence. Savchenko won
a pawn and transposed the game into a Rook and minor
piece endgame and started advancing his a pawn which
spelled doom for Karthikeyan.
Shreyansh held 2nd seed Yuri Vovk of Ukraine playing
with black pieces. The players reached an endgame very
early and Vovk managed to put pressure on his untitled
opponent. But Daklia defended well to neutralise the
initiative and even sacrificed a piece to reach a
theoretical drawn position. With this draw Daklia stays
on course for an IM norm and will need a win in the next
round to brighten his chances.
Adhiban won a short game against Padmini Rout from white
side of Sicilian Najdorf h3 variation which is becoming
popular these days in a game between to sub junior World
Champions.
