IM Lalith Babu from India created a big sensation
winning the Leiden open ahead of 7 GM’s with a defending
last round victory over GM Sanikidze(2559) from Georgia
with black pieces. The victory took his tally to 7.5
points from 9 games half a point clear of the field.
Facing the Petrosian system of Queens indian from the
black side Lalith was cornered right from the opening by
Sanikidze who seemed to be increasing the pressure with
every move. Lalith defended resolutely and this
encouraged Sanikidze to get into time trouble looking
for a quick win. Under severe time trouble Sanikidze
missed several good continuations to hand over the point
to Lalith who was very brave in defence. This is a big
victory for the young Indian. He wins the winner prize
of 1750 Euro for his efforts .

made a quick draw on the top board to finish 2nd and 3rd
places. For the 4th place 3 Indians are tied. They are

Daklia and IM Karthikeyan who had a lucky win over
compatriot VAV Rajesh. All 3 have 6.5 points and tie for
the 4th position.
