Lalith Babu in lead! Harini makes IWM norm!

by R.B.Ramesh, Grand Master

IM Lalith Babu continued his good show in the Leiden open with a fighting win over Grand Master Milos Pavlovic (2535) of Serbia in the 8th and the penultimate round to be in joint lead with GM Van den Doel and GM Savchenko on 6.5 points.

Young Harini from Tamil Nadu also completed her formalities for an International Woman Master norm irrespective of her last round result.

Shreyansh Daklia caused a mini upset beating higher rated IM Slingerland of Netherlands. A draw in the final round would give him an IM norm. Playing white side of Sicilian Rosolimo variation Daklia did not get any advantage from the opening but in the ending he obtained a good Knight versus bad Bishop position which after long conversion got him the win to move into joint second position with 6 points.

Lalith Babu played the white side of English opening and the game transposed into a Moroczy bind structure were Lalith got space advantage and launched a kingside attack with g4. Pavlovic did not defend correctly and sacrificed a pawn for unclear compensation. Lalith kept up the pressure and with a series of forcing moves won an exchange when Pavlovi decided to give up. A win in the last round over GM Sanikidze would mean a GM norm for Lalith
