GM L’Ami scored his 3rd consecutive win in three rounds
to join GM Anish Giri at top of the table with 6 points
from 7 rounds in the Dieren open. Indian IM Lalith Babu
is trailing the leaders by one point.
IM Lalith Babu got into a spot of bother against lower
rated FM Van Eijk Sander from black side of Caro Kann
advance variation with early h4 by white. Lalith played
very provocatively and the opponent obliged with a piece
sacrifice on d5. Lalith was pushed to the wall as early
as his 14th move when all white pieces were ready to
deliver the decisive blow to the black king. Intead of
opening the center completely with pawn push e6 his
opponent played slowly and allowed Lalith to escape from
the attack with a safe piece up.
IM Adhiban played the early Archangel with black pieces
and his opponent regularly exchanged pieces to reach an
equal endgame were the players agreed for a draw to
remain on 4.5 points.IM Karthikeyan joined him with a
fluent win over FM Vincent from white side of Slav
defence. Among the girls, IWM Kiran Mohanty and World
Under 14 Girls champion Padmini Rout had to defend from
dangerous positions and both managed to make a draw.
On the top board, GM Timman played the Meran system
against Anish Giri’s Semi Slav defence and got a slight
advantage out of the opening. Anish defended well to
take the game to a Rook and Bishop against Rook and
Knight ending with Timman having a passed pawn. But
Anish activated his King at the right time and both
players agreed for a draw shortly thereafter.
