Netherlands Trip Chess Tournaments

Indians have a good day
by R.B.Ramesh, Grand Master

12 member Indian team got off to a good start with most of the players winning their games in the opening round of the NK open being held here at Dieren. 93 players are competing in the tournament with latest sensation Anish Giri heading the challenge from the youngsters.

In a game between Indians, Padmini Rout was held to a draw by in- form Harini in a mini surprise from the opening round. Playing black side of Sicilian Najdorf, Padmini went ambitious by playing early g5 which was met by a piece sacrifice in the center by Harini. Harini was up a pawn for most part of the game but Padmini defended well to make a draw.

In the main upsets of the day, local hero GM Timman was held to a draw by unfancied Remco Sprangers of Netherlands. Top seed local GM Sipke Ernst, GM Reindermann, were the other GMs who were also held to a draw.
