XIV International Open Chess tournament of Balaguer , Spain

Debashis Das held Second seed GM Vladimir Bumakin

by V.Hariharan

Debashis Das (1.5) of Orissa with the black pieces held the second seed GM Vladimir Burmakin of Russia to a creditable draw at the end of the second round of the XIV International tournament of Balaguer, Spain. But the top seed of the tournament GM Kiril Georgiev of Bulgaria, with his Queen and two Bishops deftly entered Priyadharshan’s (1) Black monarch territory and clinched his second point.

Our national sub junior champion Udeshi Aditya (2) with black pieces played a scintillating game against the Latvian IM Starstits Ilmars. In the middle game he allowed his opponent to win two pieces for a Rook and two pawns but in the ensuing battle he emerged victorious with an extra rook which forced his opponent resignation.

Girish A Koushik (1.5) of Karnataka put up a stubborn defence to split the point with the GM Mateo Ramon of Republic of Dominica. Deepthamsh Reddy (1.5) of Andhra Pradesh playing with black against the German IM Kohlveyer Bernd exchanged his queen early in the classical variation of the Nimzo Indian Defence and easily drew the resulting endgame.
IM Roeder Matthias of Germany defeated Rakesh Kulkarni(1) in the rook and pawn endgame.

Shalmali Gagare (1.5) of Maharashtra employing the English opening against the Georgian FM Bregdze Levan (rating 2426) got an edge on the queen side but safely agreed draw to her opponent proposal.  All other girls of our sub junior team easily won their respective games against their lesser rated opponents. Llop Llop Joseph of Spain lost to Bharathi.R (1) in the carokann defence. Shristi J Shetty (1) defeated Sanchez Centelles Sergi of Spain in the Ruy Lopez opening.

Ivanov Markov Radoslov of Spain lost to J.Saranya (1) in the irregular Sicilian defence.
Pujari Rucha (1) won against Navarro Navarro Crescensi of Spain in the Sicilian f4 system.
Pallabi Roy (1) with white defeated Ferror Font Jordi of Spain in the carokann defence.
