15 year old sensation GM Anish Giri of Netherlands kept
his lead with a hard fought draw against top sees Ernst
Sipke in the 6th round of Dieren open. On the second
board Indian IM and World sub-junior champion Adhiban
went down to higer rated GM L’Ami Erwin of Netherlands.
Adhiban played the four Knights variation of Ruy lopez
and obtained an advantage from the opening playing some
accurate moves. In a slightly better position Adhiban
went for a piece sacrifice only to meet against an
unexpected defence from Erwin and had to lose the piece
for much less compensation than he was getting
otherwise. Adhiban put up brave fight but went down
ultimately to ramin on 4 points.
He was joined on 4 points by IM’s Lalith Babu and Shyam
Sundar both of whom won against WGM Motoc Alina and FM
VAV Rajesh respectively. Shyam sacrificed a piece in a
theoretical variation of Sicilian Sveshnikov and
obtained 2 connected passed pawns as compensation.
Rajesh went for a King side attack which shyam thwarted
well to win the game.
In another game between Indians, IWM Kiran Mohanty went
down to IM Karthikeyan after some passive play in the
Guicco piano opening. Karthikeyan generated a fierce
king side attack and won the game.
