15 year old GM Anish Giri of Netherlands extended his
lead to a full point with a comprehensive win over local
GM Friso Nijboer in the 5th round of the Dieren open.
India’s IM Adhiban is in second position with 4 points
along with 7 others. Adhiban is playing against higher
rated GM L’Ami Erwin in the 6th round after a rest day.
Adhiban beat young local FM Van Eijk Sander with black
pieces.
IM Shyam Sundar played Kings Indian defence against GM
Erwin L’Ami and the game went along theoretical lines
for many moves when Erwin came up with a novelty. Shyam
didn’t react properly and found himself with a passive
position with a bad bishop in a Queen and minor pieces
endgame. Combined with time pressure Shyam put up
resistance for some time but ultimatey had to give up to
remain on 3 points.
Indians are hoping the rest day will change their
fortunes in this tournament as things have not gone well
for many of them so far.
