All India Arbiters Refresher Course
Report - R. Anantharam

The All India Arbiters Refresher Course, organised by the Nilgiris District Chess Association at St. Jude's Public School, Kothagiri on 4th and 5th April was a grand success, as arbiters from different parts of the country congregated for a beneficial interaction. A total of 66 arbiters, from Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Maharashtra, Kolkata, Gujarat, M.P., Chandigar and Karnataka. took part in the event.

Mr. K. Muralimohan, Rating Officer, AICF and Prof.R. Anantharam, both international arbiters delivered lectures mainly on the important changes in FIDE, effective from 1st July, 2009. In addition to that, Mr. Muralimohan briefed the participants about the salient features of manual pairing, as the arbiters have to be thorough with the principles of pairing. Anantharam discussed the important aspects of the tournament rules. Mr. N.K. Nandakumar, FIDE arbiter and Development Trainer elaborated the new method of registration of players online and the role of the arbiters in it during the tournaments. Mr. Vijayaraghavan, a FIDE arbiter explained the aspects of MonRoi and how to use them to upload games live on internet. In the practical session, the arbiters had a hands on experience with MonRoi and Silver clocks.

All the arbiters felt that the entire programme was highly useful, interactive and felt that it could have been extended for one more day. They enjoyed the salubrious and pleasant climate of Kothagiri. St. Jude's Public School, a school with international reputation, played the part of an excellent host, providing a comfortable stay and sumptuous food to all participants. Mr. Premanand, the Secretary of the Nilgiris District association and his team deserve kudos for organizing such an useful clinic
