Three Players In Lead At Nagpur

By Arvind Aaron

Three Grand Masters, Nigel Short of England, Surya S Ganguly of India and Enamul Hossain of Bangladesh are leading the Commonwealth Championship with 7.5/9. With two rounds still to be played at Nagpur, one of these three players are likely to win.

The Commonwealth Championship is organised by the Nagpur District Chess Association for the first time at Nagpur. It has attracted 260 players including nine grandmasters.

In the penultimate round, Short plays white against Hossain while Ganguly takes on Rajaram Laxman.

There are plenty of roadside banners for the event which is held for the Mayors Cup. The prize fund is US$25,000. The first prize is INR 180,000.

The Commonwealth Championship had been a part of the Lloyds Bank Open in London. When the Lloyds Bank event closed down, the event found a permanent home in India. Venues as Kolkata, Sangli, Mumbai and Delhi had been staging this contest before Nagpur took the responsibility to organise it this time.

Those needing to follow the games live can go to www.commonwealth-chess.com  and see the games and results.
