White Wins 3-0 At Bilbao

White Wins 3-0 At Bilbao

By Arvind Aaron

Black players never had it worse on a single day in a category 21 tournament. All three white players won at Bilbao in Spain. Veselin Topalov scored a surprisingly easy 25-move win over Viswanathan Anand in round three to keep the lead in the Grand Slam Final Bilbao.

Nine maximum points were made in the fourth round of the six player all-play-all. Six rounds remains to be played. A win earns three points, draw one point and defeat zero. Same like "La League", the Spanish Football league. Topalov leads with eight points followed by Carlsen on seven and Aronian on five. Anand, Ivanchuk, Radjabov are tied on three points with three draws and a defeat each.

Carlsen who played the Sicilian Dragon with black earlier making a draw was at the winning end with white against the Dragon of Radjabov. Carlsen blocked and defended the queen side first before blowing up the black castled structure.

In a queen's Indian defence, Topalov trooped in with hiw rook and was about to go for a king's side attack before which Anand preferred to resign.

Aronian scored his first win at the expense of Ivanchuk in 70 moves with the white pieces.

The results (round four): Veselin Topalov (Bul) 8 bt Viswanathan Anand (Ind) 3, Magnus Carlsen (Nor) 7 bt Teimour Radjabov (Aze) 3, Levon Aronian (Arm) 5 bt Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 3.
