Topalov Wrests Lead

A race is happening for the title between Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria and Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the Grand Slam Final Bilbao. Topalov slayed the dragon of Carlsen for sole lead on 13 points.

Levon Aronian of Armenia defeated Viswanathan Anand in 75 moves to pitch his claim for the title race. He is in clear second place on 12 points.

On his part, oldest player of the meet, Ivanchuk of Lvov, Ukraine beat the second youngest Radjabov in 49 moves to join Carlsen on eleven points.

Anand slipped in the ending with a 41st move inaccuracy that gave Aronian winning chances in the rooks ending. Anand fought the rook and two pawns versus
queen but the presence of another rook a side mattered in 75 moves.

The results (round eight): Veselin Topalov (Bul) 13 bt Magnus Carlsen (Nor) 11, Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 11 bt Teimour Radjabov (Aze) 6, Viswanathan Anand  (Ind) 6 lost to Levon Aronian (Arm) 12.
