Anand Plays Fifth Draw At Bilbao

Anand Plays Fifth Draw At Bilbao
By Arvind Aaron

World Champion Viswanathan Anand drew his sixth round game against Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine with the black pieces to stay without a win in the Grand Slam Final Bilbao on September 8.

Teenaged star Magnus Carlsen swung back into sole lead defeating Levon Aronian of Armenia to reach 11 points. The first prize is Euro 150,000 and the last is Euro 30,000.

Anand is perhaps not revealing any of his preparation and is paying a mild price in prize money loss and Elo for it if it was the reason. It is normal for big stars not to accept invitations close to world title events.

Having accepted, Anand is at the receiving end of big novelties like the defeat against Topalov showed. That was his only loss and he drew five games. Four rounds remain to be played in this category 21 double all-play-all.

The results (round six): Veselin Topalov (Bul) 10 drew with Teimour Radjabov (Aze) 5, Magnus Carlsen (Nor) 11 bt Levon Aronian (Arm) 6, Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 5 drew with Viswanathan Anand (Ind) 5.
