All Games Drawn At Bilbao

All Games Drawn At Bilbao

By Arvind Aaron

Three points were destroyed in round two when all three games were drawn in round two of the Grand Slam Final Bilbao on September 3, 2008. Bilbao is in northern Spain.

Anand drew Radjabov in 34 moves with the white pieces from a Sicilian Sveshnikov. Anand is tied for the second place on two points. Carlsen leads with four points. Winner gets 3 points, draw earns one point and defeat gets nothing.

We understood that in the Anand v Ivanchuk game, of round one, the Indian was generous in making a draw offer rather than play to win on time as Ivanchuk had just 22 seconds left on his clock. Anand and Ivanchuk, rivals from the World Cadet Championship days are both born in 1969.

Carlsen sacrificed material to make a draw with the black pieces using the Sicilian dragon against Ivanchuk. It is a six player double all-play-all. Eight rounds remain to be played.

The results (round two): V. Ivanchuk (Ukr) 2 drew with M. Carlsen (Nor) 4, V. Anand (Ind) 2 drew with T. Radjabov (Aze) 2, V. Topalov (Bul) 2 drew with L. Aronian (Arm) 1.
