India Won Silver in World Mind Games

India Won Silver in World Mind Games

By Mr.Sameer Salgoacar

India was unlucky not to get the Gold medal against Ecuador in the final today. Sasikiran claimed a win against Mattamaros the same way that hosts China had claimed a win against India (Yifan against Tania) and USA claimed against India (again involving Sasikiran).

The video recording clearly showed that Matamarros had displaced his piece and then pressed the clock. However, the "Appeals Committee" decided that the Armageddon match had to be replayed and this was construed as a very strange decision by many of the people assembled there including a large contingent of the press. Clearly, many thought that India had been wronged and that Gold  was rightfully ours.

However, Sasikiran in the spirit of sportsmanship played the rematch and lost. One must give credit to both Sasikiran and Tania Sachdev for the gallant display and their fighting spirit and though we were awarded silver, in my mind atleast we have won nothing less than Gold! Earlier, India had beaten Ukraine in the semifinal with Sasikiran winning both his matches and Tania Sachdev getting a creditable 1-1 tie with her  Ukranian counterpart. In the third place match, Ukraine then  disposed off Iran contemptuously to bag the Bronze medal.

Final Standings -

1. Ecuador
2. India
3. Ukraine
