National Under-15 Chess Championship at Mangalore

The winning spree of Girish Koushik of Karnataka was halted today in the 7th round when he lost to Debasish Das of WB. From the black side of the Kalashnikov variation Girish played steadily to gain a better position only to lose later. Though Debasish had two bishops against Girish’s two knights it was far from clear. Debasish exchanged a strong knight on c5 square and controlled the light squares with his bishop. Later he went on to pickup the weak d6 and a5 pawns to win the game in 53 moves. With this timely win Debasish Das of Orissa has joined Girish Koushik of Karnataka, Aditya Udeshi of Maharastra and Utkal Ranjan Sahoo of Orissa to lead the table with 6 pts. Third seeded Stany of Karnataka played some weak moves to lose the game in 48 moves from the 2nd board. He lost an exchange in the midway and nothing to show for it and Utkal converted his advantage perfectly .
Shiven Kosla of Maharastra played an enterprising chess to win over Fenil Shah of Gujarat. Shiven playing the black side of the Sicilian , castled on the queen side, pushed the pawn in front of the king and had Fenil perplexed to end up with better rook endgame to win in 46 moves. Aditya Udeshi of Maharastra defeated Deepthamsh Reddy of AP in 60 moves. Though Aditya was two pawns up he had to play the Rook and opposite colour bishop ending precisely to notch the point.Overnight leader in the girls section Shalmali Gagare drew her game against R.Bharathi of TN. Shalmali was saddled with weak d3 pawn but with sufficient defensive resources. Both the players uninterested in this position, signed a piece treaty in 24 moves. 2nd board saw Pallabhi Roy of WB and Shristy Shetty of Karnataka draw quickly in 18 moves. Teenu’s passive play was punished by Rucha Pujari of Maharastra in 26 moves . In a game of Closed Sicilian Teenu’s Knight move led to her downfall like in the previous game, allowing Rucha to fork and win a piece.
Shalmali Gagare of Maharastra with 6pts enjoys a slender half a point lead over her nearest rivals R.Bharathi of TN, Rucha Pujari of Maharastra and Pallabhi Roy of WB who are on the jointsecond spot with 5.5 pts apiece.
