National Under-15 Chess Championship at Mangalore

By Vasanth BH

In the midway of the 34th BSNL National Sub Junior and 25th Sub Junior Girls Chess Championship held at Subramanya Sabha, Mangalore it is Girish Koushik of Karnataka the current U-13 National Champion and Asian medal winner Shalmali Gagare of Maharastra who have taken the lead. Girish is leading with full 6 points . Eight players are in the joint second spot with 5 pts. They are Debasish Das, Utkal Sahoo of Orissan, Aditya Udeshi of Maharastra, Stany of Karnataka,Fenil Shah of Gujarat,Priyadarshan of TN , Deepthamsh Reddy and Mehar Chinna Reddy of AP.
Girish Koushik of Karnataka was lucky in his top board game against Aditya Udeshi of Maharastra. In a game of Bogo Indian defence, Aditya equalised and had some advantage , but Girish gamble of attacking the king side paid off when Aditya moved his Queen overlooking the backrank weakness. On the 2nd board K.Priyadarshan of TN and Debasish Das of Karnataka fought hard before splitting the point. Debasish countered well against the h3 variation of Priyadarshan and won a knight in the 34th move. With both Queens on the board, Priyadarshan had pawn compensation for the piece in form of pawns. Seconds ticking away players unwilling to take risks signed a piece treaty. The game between 3rd seed Stany of Karnataka and Deepthamsh Reddy of AP was drawn in 40 moves from Rook and pawn endgame. Though a pawn up Stany could not convert owing to weak b6 pawn which was attacked by Deepthamsh.

Shalmali had a comfortable win over Teenu Thomas, when Teenu played a bad move to Nh6 which would not return back , it was curtains. Shalmali wisely moved the King to f8 square avoiding the exchange and the game ended in 49 moves in her favour. R.Bharathi of TN outplayed current U-13 National Champion J.Saranya in 34 moves.Bharathi playing the white side castled on the queen side against Saranya’s g6 variation of the RuyLopez. Saranya unable to find the right defence when her opponent attacked on the dark squares , overlooked a tactical shoot losing an exchange and the game as well. R.Bharathi of TN and Pallabi Roy of WB are following the leader with 5 pts apiece.

After the tiresome double rounds a day earlier , players are having some breathing time with 2 single rounds .With one more 2 round a day to go and subsequent single rounds the tournament is poised for an interesting finish . Amidst the tension the players and parents are thoroughly enjoying the breakfast , lunch and dinner which is served freely for all on all days , with appetizing varieties ranging from North to South and East to West. With V4 Media , the channel partner telecasting the tournament news daily, the organisers are determined to see that each and everyone should return home with sweet memories.
