National Under-15 Chess Championship at Mangalore

The 5th round of the BSNL sponsored 34th National SUB –JUNIOR AND 25TH SUB – JUNIOR GIRLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 concluded today. Aditya Udeshi of Maharastra and Girish Koushik of Karnataka are leading the boys section with 5 points from as many rounds. Four players namely Priyadarshan of TN, Deepthamsh Reddy of AP,Stany of Karnataka and Debasish Das of Orissa are in the joint second spot with 4.5 pts.

On the top board Aditya Udeshi playing a quiet game against Utkal Ranjan Sahoo of Orissa ripped open Sahoo’s King side with good combination between 16 to 20th move netting him pawns. Aditya continued to maintain his advantage and the game ended in 36 moves. P.Lokesh of TN was punished by current u-11 National champion Girish Koushik when a careless play ended in Lokesh parting his rook for his opponents knight as early as 17th move.Though Lokesh started improving his play Girish skilfully thwarted his opponents counterplay and won the game 44th move. Second seeded Debasish Das capitalised on his opponents error on 28th move winning the queen for his rook and netted a point in 41 moves. Current u-13 National champion and FM Saikrishna of AP was beaten by Anandraj of TN in 39 moves. Sai’s Knight sacrifice on f5 square was well countered by Anandraj by exchange of rooks for Sai’s Queen and Anandraj was well in terms to maintain his advantage. In the Girls section Shalmali Gagare of Maharastra and Teenu Thomas of Kerala are leading with 4.5 pts from 5 rounds. Shalmali outplayed Sukanya Dutta of WB in a long battle of 73 moves. Shrishti Shetty of Karnataka signed piece treaty with R.Bharathy of TN in 37 moves with both the players unwilling to take risks. Teenu Thomas of Keral beat Kerala beat Savetha when her opponent’s counter attack was a bit slow and won the game in 58 moves.
