National Under-15 Chess Championship at Mangalore

By Vasanth BH

The 3rd round of the BSNL sponsored 34th National SUB –JUNIOR AND 25TH SUB – JUNIOR GIRLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 saw the leaders sailing to the top layer. As one would say when the going gets tough, the tough gets going, the seeded players found their rhythm with top seed Prasanna Rao of Maharastra scoring over G.Akash of TN quickly in34 moves.Though the game followed a theoretical path of Sicilian Pelikan variation , Akash’s sacrifice of a bishop in the 26 th move seemed to be a mistake . He could not set a mating attack against his opponents king and facing a mating attack himself Akash resigned in 34 moves. The order of the day seem to be the endgames . On the 2nd board draw between Navalgund of Karnataka and Ramnath Bhuvanesh of TN which was a Queen and Bishop ending with Ramnath having a pawn up but could not be materialised. Aditya Udesh faced some difficulty in the rook and pawn ending against Yashas of Karnataka before scoring a point from 66 moves.
14 players share the lead with 3pts at the end of 3rd round. Prasanna Rao , Aditya Udeshi , Pranav Shetty , Shardul Gagare , Shiven Kosla and Rakesh Kulkarni of Maharastra , Fenil Shah of Gujarat , Priyadarshan , P.Lokesh and Ajay Srikanth of TN , Deepthamsh Reddy and G V Saikrishna of AP , Girish Koushik of Karnataka and Utkal Ranjan Sahoo of Orissa are sharing the lead.

Five share the lead with 3 points from as many round in the girls section.Shalmali Gagare and Rucha Pujari of Maharastra , R.Bharathi of TN, Pallabi Roy of WB and Shika Shah of Gujarat are leading the pack with 3 points. Top seed Shalmali Gagare of Maharastra had a easy win against Sahari of AP in 35 moves on the first board . When things were going smoothly Sahari overenthusiastically sacrificed an exchange on the 22nd move viewing an mating which was thwarted rightly by Shalmali. But Preetika Tayal of Delhi surprised her 2nd seeded opponent Mohanapriya of TN from as early as 3rd move by moving her pawn to d3 square which was quite unusual. Though later it transposed into a sort of Kings Indian Attack, Preetika was determined to draw her higher rated opponent by timely exchange of pieces in 39 moves.
