National Under-15 Chess Championship at Mangalore

The 2nd round of the BSNL sponsored 34th National SUB –JUNIOR AND 25TH SUB – JUNIOR GIRLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 had some early surprises in store. In the first board top seed Prasanna Rao of Maharastra faced stiff resistance from Akash P C Iyer of Tamilnadu. In a game of Nimzo Indian defence playing the black side Prasanna over came Akash in a long grinding game of eighty three moves. Jaswant G of Tamilnadu surprised highly ELO rated Stany G A of Karnataka. Playing the white side jaswant opted for the Trompowsky variation and entered in to opposite colour bhishop ending with Stany having a extra pawn, which could not be materialised. The game ended in a draw in sixty one move.

The major surprise in the boys section was Sai Prahalad of Tamilnad defeating Himal gussain of Chandigarh. Sai chose an off beat line against Himals d5 reply. In the 15th move Sai attacked on the F file and maintained the advantageous position to win the game in 54 moves.
In the Girls section top two seed players won comfortably. Third seed J Saranya of tamilnadu, current Under 13 National Champion suffered a shocking defeat in the hands of Local star Vanessa D’Souza of Mangalore. In a game arising out of four knights scotch variation, Vanessa held slight advantage and later when sharanya messed up with a pawn push at twenty seventh move the game ended in Vanessa’a favour.
