India versus
Armenia Under-21 Match
By Arvind Aaron
Delhi will be the venue for the inaugural Under-21 India versus Armenia
Friendship Chess Match from November 30 to December 2. The venue will be
the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Delhi.
The team event will be played over four boards. India will be headed by
World Junior champion Abhijeet Gupta, World Under-16 champion B. Adhiban,
GM-elect S. Arun Prasad, former World Under-12 champion Deep Sengupta, IM
Gogineni Rohith. Coach for the Indian team will be IM Vishal Sareen.
Armenia will be represented by GM Avetik Grigoryan, GM Zaven Adriasian, IM
Hrant Melkumyan, FM Ter-Sahakyan Samvel.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will be the sponsor and fund the
event. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Treasurer, AICF and Secretary, Delhi Chess
Association will organise the show. International Master G.B. Joshi will
be the co-ordinator. Gopakumar of Delhi will be the chief arbiter.
India has not played such matches before. This is a new idea. It should
help a great deal as team competitions are not popular in India. Armenia
are serious opponents. They are for example, winners of the Chess Olympiad
at Turin 2006. Armenia and India have hosted the World Juniors more times
than others and a match between these nations will be interesting.
There will be three rounds and played on four boards. Colour will
alternate in the first and second round. In the third round, there will be
a colour toss. Colours wont matter since a team having white will play
white on board one and three and black on boards two and four.
The time control will be 90 minutes and a 30 second increment per move.
The winner of round one will get two points and loser zero. In case of a
2-2 draw, the score will be one each. After three matches if both teams
had won one each and drawn the third one, the tie will be declared a draw
