Aditya, Bharathi Win Sub-Junior On Tie-Break

By Arvind Aaron

Tie-break decided who won the National Sub-Junior at Mangalore on December 4. Contests in age group are getting fiercer and one sided contests are a thing of the past. Those who finish second on tie-break are in no way weaker than the champions. Leader Bharathi of Chennai (Trained by K.Gopalakrishnan)  had extra pawns in the queen ending but drew the final round to win the title on better tie-break than Rucha Pujari of Kolhapur. Both scored 8.5/11.

In the boys section, Aditya Udeshi scored a final round victory over G. Akash to take the title on 9/11. Aditya's tie-break score was more than K. Priyadharshan of Madurai as he won his maiden Sub-Junior title. The South Kanara District Chess Association organised the show in a nice manner.

Pravin Thipsay who is on a high said in an SMS that Aditya was the second Mumbai player player to win the prestigious event in 32 years. His brother Satish Mahadeo Thipsay won the National Sub-Junior at Kottayam, Kerala in 1976. Thipsay is on a high since his students are winning Nationals. Only last month, G.V. Sai Krishna won the National U-13 at Vellore.
