FIDE Course Inaugurated at Chennai, India
The
FIDE Trainer and Instructor Courses is being held in India for the first
time and was inaugurated by J.C.D. Prabhakaran, Vice President of the
Tamil Nadu State Chess Association at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in
Chennai on May 1.
Speaking
at a brief ceremony, D.V.Sundar, Honorary Secretary of the All India Chess
Federation said bringing this prestigious training course to India helped
mitigate the financial strain of Indians who had to travel to Germany or
Singapore in the past.
Chief
Guest Mr.J.C.D.Prabhakaran, in his inaugural address lauded the efforts of
the All India Chess Federation in bringing such courses to India. He was
particularly impressed, the way the AICF is running its affairs under the
leadership of its President Mr.N.Srinivasan.
The courses will be conducted by International Master Jovan Petronic of
Serbia and FIDE Master Peter Long of Malaysia. Petronic is one of the
world's senior trainers having trained four Yugoslav World Chess Olympiad
teams. Peter Long is a former Malaysian champion.
The students numbering around twenty include International Master Neeraj
Mishra, Woman International Master Mrunalinee Kunte, Women International
Master Saheli Barua, International Arbiter K. Muralimohan, FIDE Master V.
Hariharan, G.B.Joshi, FIDE Master Visweswaran etc.
"When I visited India in the past, I learnt many things from your players
like International Master Raja Ravisekhar and it is a honour to teach now
in India," said Peter Long who is well known in Indian chess circles.
"On arrival at Chennai, India, the country where chess was born, my second
dream was complete," said Jovan Petronic. His first dream was to meet
Robert James Fischer which he said happened during the second Fischer-Spassky
match near Belgrade. Co-ordinator, Praful Zaveri of Mumbai introduced the
trainers who were garlanded.
D.V. Sundar said this event will provide Indian chess with tremendous
amount of training opportunities in the period ahead.
