Anand Loses To Aronian
By Arvind Aaron
Levon
Aronian of Armenia forged ahead in the 17th Amber Chess Tournament with a
1.5-0.5 win over second placed world champion Viswanathan Anand at Nice on
Easter Sunday.
Sunday's defeat in blindfold chess proved costly as he slid from second
place to tied four-seven places. Anand is on 8.5/16 and with three rounds
or six games still left, he can still improve rapidly. Aronian leads with
10.5/16. He maintains his one point lead with that win over Anand from the
Semi-Slav.
Aronian won a rook for minor piece and than used good technique to convert
the advantage. In the reverse rapid game, Anand faced a Marshall attack
and offered a draw when the presence of opposite colour bishop became
evident.
Carlsen had a huge day when he won Mamedyarov 2-0 to highjump to clear
second pace on 9.5 points.
The round eight results (blindfold): Aronian bt Anand, Carlsen bt
Mamedyarov, Karjakin drew with Topalov, Van Wely lost to Leko, Gelfand
drew with Morozevich, Ivanchuk drew with Kramnik.
