Magnus Carlsen of Norway shocked former world champion Vladimir Kramnik of
Russia with black to join Levon Aronian of Armenia in the lead with 7.5
points at the end of the twelfth and penultimate round in the Corus Chess
Tournament at Wijk aan Zee on January 26.
Viswanathan Anand drew Loek Van Wely of Tilburg with the black pieces to
take his tally to seven points and share the third place with Teimour
Radjabov of Azerbaijan.
Anand needs a win with white against Kramnik on Sunday to catch up with
the two leaders for the title. The title is always shared at Wijk aan Zee
and tie-break is not applied. Carlsen v Radjabov, Polgar v Aronian are the
other two pairings of importance.
In Saturday's game, Anand played the queen's Indian defence with black and
drew a pawn ending in 45 moves.
In the Grand Master Group B, Harikrishna drew Krasenkow with white to
reach 7 points and Humpy lost to Spoelman with black to stay on five
points. Hari is on fourth place.
In the Grand Master Group C, Parimarjan Negi of Delhi has a chance to
defeat F.Caruana with black in the final round and share the title on nine
points. If he wins, he will earn a ticket to next years Grand Master Group
B. On Saturday, Negi beat Grivas with white to tally 8/12. Caruana beat
Friso Nijboer with black to lead with 9/12.
