By Arvind Aaron

World champion Viswanathan Anand scored his first win in the Corus Chess Tournament as he reached fifty percent score with 3.5/7. This category 20 event runs from January 12-27 at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands.

Anand played the Sicilian Najdorf with the black pieces against the No.1 ranked women's player Judit Polgar of Budapest. At a tactical point, black ceded two rooks for a queen and pawn. Anand used the queen well and combined it well with the knight to win a pawn and also an exchange. Judit resigned in 53 moves.

In the grand master group B, Harikrishna (4/7) signed a draw after he could not defeat GM Nepomniachtchi of Russia with a rook and bishop against a rook. The Russian claimed a draw via the 50-move rule on the 122nd turn. Koneru Humpy (3/7) crushed Krasenkow of Poland in a minor piece ending.

Parimarjan Negi's score against WGM Lahno may be in the negative but his overall score against women got one better when he crushed WGM Irina Krush of USA to reach 4/7. Negi has not drawn a single game and is on an uncompromising journey in the Grand Master Group C tournament.
