Indians Win $4000, Chanda Finishes Third

GM Sandipan Chanda of ONGC, Kolkata finished third in the Singapore Masters Open that was held in the island from Dec 17-22, 2007. Chess activity in Singapore is at an all time high.

Two other Indians, IMs P.D.S.Girinath of South Central Railway, Hyderabad and R.R.Laxman of Chennai took part. Laxman finished sixth and Girinath eighth.

A total of 42 players from around the world took part in this event which was restricted to players with 2100 rating for the Masters and below 2100 for the Challengers Open.

The event was won by second seed GM Zurab Azmaiparashvili of Georgia who had the higher tie-break score than GM Zhang Zhong of Singapore (moved over from China) after they both made 7/9. Chanda scored 6.5 and finished third and picked up USD 2,000. Laxman and Girinath received USD 1,000 each.

The fourth place was shared by four players and it included IM Julion Sadorra Catalino, GM Dao Thien Hai, IM Laxman, GM Susanto Megaranto and IM Girinath. Laxman let his GM Norm slip when he lost to Azmaiparashvili in the penultimate round.
