Anand Best Sportsman Of 2007
By Arvind Aaron
Viswanathan Anand has been awarded the CNN Indian of the year 2007 in the
sports category. The All India Chess Federation congratulates the World
champion Vishy Anand for his immense contribution to chess which has
helped him and chess fly high in the land the game was invented.
It is not easy to win the Best Sportsman of India. Indians traditionally
prefer ball oriented sports. For the 1969-born Chennai legend to win this
award in the year when we won the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup is something
special.
The year 2007 saw Anand regain his Linares Title in March. Then on April 2
he became the World's No.1 ranked player for the first time. On September
29, he regained the World Chess Title. The Chess Oscar for 2007 should
come surely later.
CNN IBN's award is healthy, positive recognition for chess. Anand is
currently competing in the Corus Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee in the
Netherlands
