Stars galore in Parsvnath Chess

The 6th Parsvnath International Chess tournament will be held in the National capital from 12-20 January 2007 at Modern School Barakhamba Road.

The annual event will grow bigger then ever in terms of numbers as around 400 participants from 20 Countries are going to take part this time to contest for a record prize pool of Rs. 10 lakhs.

Grandmaster and national champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly will spearhead the Indian challenge and will be amongst the favourites to win the title in a competitive field boasting of 15 Grandmasters and over 40 other titled players.

Prominent Grandmasters in the fray are Commonwealth champion R B Ramesh, Elizbar Ubilava, the famous Georgian trainer of Viswanathan Anand who is now residing in Spain and working with quite a few Indian Grandmasters. The top seed will be Ghaem Maghami Ehsan of Iran and the other Iranian GM in the fray is Mahjoob Morteza. Ziaur Rahman will be the Bangladeshi challenge in the 10-rounds event while Grandmaster Igor Kurnosov will represent the Russian interest. Besides, there are three Grandmasters from Uzbekistan viz. Saidali Iuldashev, Marat Dzhumaev and Safin Shukhrat.

The Parsvnath event is famous for norm seekers getting there coveted International norms and this time too there will be no exception. Delhi's Sahaj Grover, the former under-10 world champion will be looking for a repeat performance after the recently concluded Commonwealth championship where he made his maiden IM norm. Also in the norm hunt will be International Master and Asian Women's champion Tania Sachdev who will be vying for her second Grandmaster norm. Apart from these two there will be at least 40-50 norm seekers for IM, GM WGM and WIM norms.

As a run up to the event, the Delhi Chess Association has planned a gala Simultaneously exhibition match between Grandmasters and some of the budding youngsters and enthusiasts of the country. The Simultaneous exhibition wherein four Grandmasters will play with 100 players, will be held at tournament venue on Saturday, 12th January at 4:30 PM.
