Club India team tasted its first defeat when they were defeated 1.5-2.5 by Qi Yuan Club of China in the fourth round of the 1st Asia Club Cup at Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates on Dec 28.

The lone decisive result came from the top board where R.R. Laxman was defeated by Grand Master Wang Hao. In the other three boards, Indians were lower rated on all of them but made creditable draws. Deep Sengupta, P. Karthikeyan and S. Nitin held 2500+ rated opponents like GM Zhou Jianchao, Zhou Weiqi, GM Weng Yang to draws.

In the points table, Al-Ain Chess Club of UAE, the hosts who are represented by four European Grandmasters and one Chinese grandmaster are on top with 14/16. Tied for the second place on 12.5 points are Club India, Vietnam Victory Club and Qi Yuan Club.

Three rounds remain to be played. In the fifth round on Monday evening, Club India face Tagaytay Chess Club of the Philippines. In the first two rounds, Club India beat Sri Lanka Chess Club and Yemen Chess Club 4-0.

This event carries a prize fund of US$60,000 with the winning team getting US$20,000. The 30-team tournament has 30 grandmasters among the participants
