Amrutha holds Soumya

New Delhi (20/12/08 ) :- Amrutha Mokal of Maharashtra held overnight leader state mate Soumya Swaminathan to a creditable draw on the top table in the third round of ongoing Parsvnath 35th National Women's Chess Championship at Russian Centre for Science and Culture here on Saturday.

Amrutha played a fine game to hold Soumya from the black side of Sicilian Defence. Soumya tried hard to take full point from the outing, but found Amrutha's defence as a tough nut to crack and signed the peace treaty after 37 moves.

Defending champion and top seed International Master Tania Sachdev still searching for her second victory in the tournament as she satisfied with a half point in the third round match against third seed Eesha Karavade in 53 moves. Second seed Kruttika Nadig amended herself for her mistake in the previous round and beat Goan girl Bhakti Kulkarni after a marathon match that lasted in 73 moves. Playing white side of Sicilian defence, seasoned campaigner Swathi Ghate got better off Padmini Rout of Orissa.

Continuing her splendid display in the tournament Chennai based Pon N Krithika held Women Grand Master Nisha Mohota in the third round. This half point helped Krithika to maintain her second spot with 2 points. After a slow start to the proceedings Asian Junior Champion Mary Ann Gomes came back strongly to defeat Kiran Manisha Mohanty in 37 moves.

Soumya is still maintains her sole lead with 2.5 points. She is closely followed by Women Grand Master Swathi Ghate, second seed Kruttika Nadig and Chennai girl Pon N Krithika with a drift of half point.
