Rajesh In Second Place

By Arvind Aaron

Velammal School boy V.A.V. Rajesh of Chennai recorded an important victory over Navin Kanna of Chennai to close the gap on leader R.R. Laxman. Overnight leader R.R. Laxman remained quiet with a nine move draw against Ram S Krishnan in the seventh round of the St Joseph's National Under-25 Chess Tournament at Chennai on December 20.

These two above results meant that Laxman leads by only half a point having 6.5/7. Rajesh is on six points after that win against Navin Kanna. Three players - P. Sivasankari, Ram S Krishnan and P. Karthikeyan share the third place with 5.5 points.

Laxman respects Ram S Krishnan and hence the quick nine move draw. Rajesh won a central pawn in a tactic and defeated Navin Kanna. Siddharth gave a knight for pawn and did not find compensation against Karthikeyan to lose. Sivasankari of Chennai moved into the top bracket after Ajay Srikanth lose a knight in a pin. Two rounds remain to be played.
